Friday Favorites

For this blog post, we decided to switch it up a bit.  We both love to read and, like the blog says, “try new things.”  So, for today, we decided to share with you some of our current favorite things that would not necessarily take up a whole blog post on their own.  It has been a long week with kids and this time change.  Sometimes it is hard to take time for ourselves.  We might not be able to hit the restaurant or movie scene like we used to, but here are a few things that we are enjoying or keeping us entertained right now (i.e. getting us through folding the laundry).  Please share with us what you are enjoying this week.

Jane The Virgin (on Netflix)

Okay, if you can get past the title, this show is a surprising delight.  I only gave this show a shot because “Pop Culture Happy Hour” reviewed it, and I usually trust their judgment.  I knew going in that the plot was going to be a little ridiculous and dramatic.  However, I was curious about this show that was getting such good reviews and winning awards.  Well, you will just have to take my word for it, but it is so funny.  The show is in on the joke about the ridiculous plot lines, and the voice over Hispanic voice makes the show.  We both are now watching it and glad we discovered it.  The first season is on Netflix.  The best scenes are the ones that involve the Telenovela star “Rogelio.”  It’s no wonder he has been nominated for so many awards.  Just trust us, this is an unexpected treat.

The Yellow Table

As much as we love blogging, we also love reading stuff from other bloggers.  Lindsey has recently stumbled upon this blog, and she is slightly obsessed.  You know we love recipes and dinner parties, so if you love these things as well, you will love

Game Change (the book)

Game Change

This is by no means a political blog, so we will not get too far into this.  However, as Communication majors, we love a good political race and analyzing what goes into a campaign.  Whether you are a Republican or Democrat, the 2010 book “Game Change” is a fascinating look into the presidential campaign in 2008 (the writers also came out with the book “Double Down” about the 2012 campaign).  With the election year coming up, it is interesting to go back and read this book like we have done lately.  The authors conducted thousands of interviews with behind the scenes operatives of the campaigns.  It will change the way you look at politics and campaigning.

I (Laura) just switched from SUV to minivan last week.  We bought a used Odyssey.  I always thought we would wait until we had three kids to get a minivan, but I got the bug.  This, so far, has been the best purchase!  From the sliding doors to the DVD player, I now understand why so many people make the switch.  With two in carseats, the minivan has made our life so much easier.  My husband, who started off as a skeptic, is now completely sold.  We both have asked the other this week, “Is it weird that seeing the minivan in the driveway makes me so happy?”  We are in that stage of life and have no shame in owning it!

The Anniversary of Jessie Spano (and the caffeine pills)

It’s been 25 years this week since Jessie Spano was addicted to caffeine pills on “Saved By The Bell.”  Yes, that was actual real news.  All we can say is that it never gets old.  Glad Jessie could kick the habit.  Enjoy this link: Jessie Spano.
